DKW (Dampf-Kraft-Wagen, English: “steam-powered car”, also Deutsche Kinder-Wagen English: “German kids’ car”. Das-Kleine-Wunder, English: “the little wonder” or Des-Knaben-Wunsch, English: “the boy’s wish”- from when the company built toy two-stroke engines) is a German car and motorcycle marque. The company and brand is one of the ancestor companies of the modern day Audi company, being one of the four companies that formed Auto-Union.

DKW history

Dkw is an old German auto and engine cycle marque. The name determines from Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (English: steam-driven auto).

In 1916, the Danish specialist Jorgen Skafte Rasmussen established a production line in Zschopau, Saxony, Germany, to prepare steam fittings. In that year, he endeavored to prepare a steam-driven auto, called the Dkw. Despite the fact that unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy motor in 1919, called Des Knaben Wunsch—”the kid’s yearning”. He additionally put a marginally changed form of this motor into a cruiser and called it Das Kleine Wunder—”the wonder”. This was the true start of the Dkw mark: by the 1930s, Dkw was the planet’s biggest cruiser maker.



In 1932, Dkw blended with Audi, Horch and Wanderer, to structure the Auto Union. Automobile Union went under Daimler-Benz possession in 1957, and was then obtained by the Volkswagen Group in 1964. The last German assembled Dkw auto was the F102 which stopped preparation in 1966.

Dkw badged autos proceeded to be constructed under permit in Brazil and Argentina until, separately, 1967 and 1969.

Dkw autos were produced out of 1928 until 1966, separated from an interference brought on by war.
